The Pakistan Update is a site devoted to the latest news about Pakistan, South Asia and the vital relationship between Pakistan and the United States. We provide original articles and keen commentary free of spin, rumor and bias, focusing on the rich political, democratic and cultural news from one of the world’s most talked- and written-about regions. We bring together a variety of voices to advance the cause of human rights, democracy and a free and fair judiciary in Pakistan.
Since its founding as an independent country in 1947, Pakistan’s history has been characterized by extremes which often take place in brutal cycles. Founded as a country open to all beliefs, it seems that its evolving into a slaughterhouse tortured by religious extremists. Democracy to military rule. World player to a nation taken for granted by the great powers. Staunch American ally to a nation suspicious of the U.S.’s fickle loyalty and suspicious of American support.
Pakistan is now at a historical crossroads. Democratic institutions are a weak child that could succumb to the common cold. The much-heralded expansion of media outlets in Pakistan has given cynicism, intrigue and conspiracy theory an outlet to flourish and legitimize. One of the casualties of this environment is increasingly negative perception of the United States and its interest in Pakistan.
The Pakistan Update was established to cut through the fog of mis-and disinformation about the crucial relationship between Pakistan and the U.S. and clarify misperceptions Pakistanis have of Americans and vice versa. Our goal is to provide fair but honest coverage of the changing dynamic between the two countries, while providing a platform for voices that in many cases get short shrift in the sensationalistic and oftentimes biased information provided by not only the Pakistani media, but also the often shallow and uninformed coverage of Pakistan in the Western press.
